Network Marketing Prospecting - Why You Hate It and What To Do About It
For most of us, prospecting is about as natural as taking a flying jump off a bridge with a bungee cord tied to our feet. The
really sad thing is that in network marketing, most of us actually crash into the rocks below. It's a painful process that most of us want to
avoid. The critical element to being successful in network marketting, is in finding an answer to this problem.
The Traditional Ways to Build a Network Marketing Business
-
Make a names list
-
Call your friends and family with your upline
-
Ask for referrals
-
3 foot rule - Talk to anyone within distance
-
Hand out DVD's
-
Follow up with people who are mysteriously unavailable all the sudden
-
Attend Meetings, Events, and Trainings and hopefully find someone to take with you
Top 3 Reasons Why You Hate This Form of
Prospecting
1. You Do Not like Selling - It is very uncomfortable to approach people
you know and then ask them if they have any interest in looking over a business opportunity. You are afraid of what they are going to think
about you. You are afraid what they may say about you.
2. The Rejection is Painful - It feels really bad to have someone say no.
It feels like a personal rejection, and sometimes it really is. Your prospect may be rejecting the industry, the opportunity, or maybe even
you personally and that feels really bad.
3. No one wants to invite their friends into the pressure and rejection
that they have already experienced. It is indeed a hard sell to ask people to join you in something that you KNOW is not easy to do. Yes, you
really would love to help people change their lives, but you know that it's not easy. This leaves you with very mixed feelings about
approaching people.
The Big Problem
Think about it this way. A server at your favorite restaurant does not get
mad if you decide not to try the special. It is because they really do not care what you order. They are just there to serve whatever you want
to order.
Now imagine what would happen if the server had to go out and convince their friends and family to come eat at their restaurant. The server would
not like all the pressure or the fear of rejection and neither do you.
So what's the big problem? It's this. The
traditional approaches to network marketing involve aggressive selling to people who are NOT interested.
The Solution
You need a system that makes prospects come to you. It really does not
require any motivation to talk to people who are highly interested and asking you for more information. It is actually really easy, and very
motivating in itself. One of my favorite authors (Ann Sieg) says "A prospect that comes to you is infinitely
more qualified than anyone you could approach yourself". And she is completely right.
In summary, the traditional forms of network marketing usually involve
highly aggressive forms of sales; and they are probably making you very uncomfortable. They are painful for both you and your prospects. They
leave you drained, and doubting your ability to succeed. Your only choice to make network marketing work for you, is to find a system that
creates truly interested prospects that come to you.
